The Commission on Massage Therapy Accreditation (COMTA) is one of the organizations that work with massage schools in the U.S. Most areas in the country require a massage therapist to obtain a license in order to practice. Licensing requirements vary greatly from state-to-state and city-to-city. Currently, there are 39 states in the United States that require and issue Massage Therapist licenses.

The general court, to protect the health, safety, and welfare of the people, establishes a regulatory board for licensure of massage therapists, approval of massage therapy educational programs, and registration of somatic and bodywork practitioners.

According to state of Nevada: NRS 640C.450 – “A Licensed Massage Therapist must physically post or have on their person, their current license to be practicing Massage Therapy in the State of Nevada."
