What is Grand Theft Auto or also known as “motor vehicle theft”?  It is a criminal act of an individual if he or she stole a vehicle that belongs from another person.Motor Vehicle theft, for is defined as the theft of a self-propelled vehicle that runs on the surface of the land but not on rails. Motor vehicles include automobiles, trucks, motorcycles, and the like. One offense is counted for each vehicle stolen. This category does not include boats, farm equipment, tractors, bulldozers, etc. Motor vehicle theft does not include using a vehicle without the owner's consent if prior consent or lawful access has been granted. Obtaining vehicles through fraud or failure to return rented vehicles are not included in this category.

In 2004, there were an estimated 1,237,114 motor vehicle thefts in the Nation. The number of motor vehicles estimated to have been stolen in 2004 decreased 1.9 percent from the 2003 estimate, increased 6.6 percent from the 2000 estimate, and decreased 16.0 percent from the 1995 estimate.Attempts to steal motor vehicles as well as "joyrides" are counted as motor vehicle thefts. Nationwide in the US in 2005, there were an estimated 1.2 million motor vehicle thefts, or approximately 416.7 motor vehicles stolen for every 100,000 inhabitants.  Property losses due to motor vehicle theft in 2005 were estimated at $7.6 billion.

In most cases, a typical motor vehicle theft leaves police with no witnesses or leads to look into, and little information to help them in searching for your stolen automobile.

The following are the methods of a criminal to steal a vehicle:

  • Theft of an unattended vehicle without key:The removal of a parked vehicle either by breaking and entry, followed by hotwiring or other tampering methods to start the vehicle, or else towing.
  • Theft with access to keys:Known in some places as "Taken without Owner's Consent” The unauthorized use of a vehicle in which the owner has allowed the driver to have possession of or easy access to the keys. Often, this is the adolescent or grown child or employee of the vehicle's owner, who, at other times, may be authorized to use the vehicle. May be treated differently, depending on the jurisdiction's laws, and in some cases, the owner may choose not to press charges.
  • Opportunistic theft:The removal of a vehicle that the owner or operator has left unattended with the keys visibly present.
  • Carjacking:Refers to the taking of a vehicle by force or threat of force from its owner or operator.
  • Fraudulent theft:Illegal acquisition of a vehicle from a seller through fraudulent transfer of funds thatthe seller will ultimately not receive many vehicles stolen in this manner is resold quickly thereafter.
